The Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to three scientists whose research has paved the way for cancer treatment.

The Nobel Prize winners in science have been announced. Carolyn Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and Kay Barry Sharpless have received the award. Their names were announced on Wednesday by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. According to the Nobel Prize Committee, they were awarded the prize for their development in the field of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry.

All three will receive SEK 10 million, or Rs 4.7 crore. The funds will be divided equally among the three scientists. It should be noted that Barry Sharpless has set a precedent by winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the second time. He is the fifth scientist in the world to receive the award for the second time.

Madame Curie had previously won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1903) and Chemistry (1911). Similarly, Frederick Sanger won the Nobel Prize twice. All three scientists have done significant work on the chemical action of molecules. Their research points to new directions in cancer treatment.
