Operation Green is a government of India initiative designed to ensure that fruits and vegetables reach every state in India. While focusing on crop production is vital, it is equally important to establish an efficient supply chain to prevent fluctuations in prices. The central government has taken significant steps to enhance the availability and accessibility of fruits and vegetables across the nation.

Improving the Supply of Fruits and Vegetables

The central government is actively engaged in efforts to improve the supply of fruits and vegetables throughout the country. Operation Green has been instrumental in achieving this goal, bringing about positive changes in various state markets. As a result, the fluctuations in prices of fruits and vegetables have been minimized, benefitting both farmers and consumers.

Investment and Expenditure

To ensure the success of Operation Green, the central government has initiated three registered projects related to the scheme. These projects have already made a significant impact on the fruit and vegetable markets across the country. The government plans to allocate approximately Rs 2500 crore towards the implementation of these projects. Additionally, other ministries are extending their support to ensure the scheme’s success.

Central Government’s Subsidy Initiative

To facilitate the success of Operation Green, the central government is providing a subsidy. Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana, which falls under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, the government is offering assistance in two ways. Firstly, the government bears up to 50 percent of the transportation costs incurred in transferring the crops from farmers’ fields to the market. This significantly reduces the burden on farmers and traders, thus helping control market prices. Secondly, measures are in place to ensure that raw crops and fruits remain fresh and unspoiled during transportation, thereby allowing for longer storage periods.

Diverse Range of Crops

Operation Green encompasses a wide array of crops. Apart from the three major vegetables, tomato, onion, and potato (TOP), the central government has included 22 additional crops under the scheme. The Ministries of Agriculture, Food, Consumer Affairs, Food Processing, Railways, and Civil Aviation are collectively involved in ensuring the success of Operation Green by promoting the cultivation and supply of these crops.

Public-Private Partnership

In a bid to make Operation Green successful, the central government invited private sector companies to participate in the projects in November 2022. Out of the 56 applications received during the first phase, 46 have been approved. The total cost of these projects is expected to exceed Rs 22 crore, with Rs 1752 crore already invested by the private sector. This collaboration will increase the overall capacity of food processing by 8.25  lakh tonnes and augment cold storage capacity by 1.81 lakh tonnes.

Positive Results and Market Stability

The implementation of Operation Green has yielded encouraging results. The supply of fruits and vegetables has become more consistent and widespread, thanks to the scheme’s initiatives. Stable market prices have been a direct outcome of these efforts. Additionally, the central government’s emphasis on infrastructure development, transportation subsidies, and storage facilities has played a crucial role in ensuring the availability of fresh produce across the nation.
